Where is Camp Claremont located?
We are located at 41 Broad Street in the heart of the Financial District. Claremont is easily accessed by a number of subway lines (1,2,3,4,5,R,W,J,M,Z). Camp Claremont is housed inside Claremont Preparatory School and uses all of the facilities of this fantastic building. Features include an indoor swimming pool, tremendous new rooftop play structure, gymnasium, specialty classrooms, the Broad Street Ballroom, and beautiful age-appropriate classrooms.
Can you tell me about a typical camp day?
A full camp day runs from 8:30-3:30. Every day students will engage in a balanced range of activities, including swimming, sports, music and other performing arts, crafts and visual arts, karate, yoga, silly science, and much more. Every day, campers will spend some time outdoors, either on our magnificent rooftop playground or in a nearby park. Special events, engaging performers and occasional trips to local sites of interest ensure that each day and week are exciting for our campers! Three year olds participate in our half-day program which ends at 1 pm. Half-day campers will swim twice each week.
What activities does Camp Claremont offer?
As mentioned above, students will swim every day. Most days this is an instructional swim period followed by about 10 minutes of free play in the pool. Claremont Prep’s Aquatics Director oversees the summer camp swim program as well. The sports program uses the beautiful gymnasium and consists of soccer, kickball, whiffle ball, capture the flag, and more. Karate, creative movement, yoga, drama games, music, cooking, science, woodworking, arts & crafts, and computers are the other primary activities. Free play is provided at times to help transition our campers through the camp day and give them a release from the structure from which they often need a break. This includes time on our rooftop playground, in our tremendous block area, or within each group’s “home base” classroom.
What about your week-long intensive programs?
For older children, entering grades 4th-8th, we have created dynamic week-long programs geared to particular interests. This summer, we are offering Fine Arts Workshop, Cooking Academy, Music Camp, a Voice & Performance Intensive, and Film Camp! Participants will receive high-level instruction from our outstanding faculty and other experts in the activity area. There will also be excursions and workshops by visiting experts to diversify the experience. Families will be invited to attend a culminating event on the Friday of each week that will demonstrate the work that the children have done. Fine Artists will host a gallery show; Cooks will prepare a lunch; Musicians and Vocalists will perform a concert; Film Makers will have a screening! The hours of these “academies” are 8:30 am-3:30 pm.
Who are your campers and staff?
Most of Claremont’s campers attend the Claremont Prep School or will be starting at Claremont in September. In fact, for those just starting at Claremont in the Fall, camp is a great introduction to the school. Other children come from Lower Manhattan, Greenwich Village, Brownstone Brooklyn, and other New York neighborhoods to experience the outstanding programs. The majority of the camp staff work at Claremont Prep during the school year. The familiarity of the staff with many of the campers, each other, and the facilities help to create a warm, caring atmosphere at Camp. Children attending, must turn 3 years old by June 15, 2010 and be toilet-trained.
Are there special days?
Of course! We will have events such as Camp Carnival, Crazy Hat Day and much, much more! Most importantly, we will do everything we can to make sure that every day is one to remember at camp!
Do you provide lunch for campers?
Yes. The Executive Chef and other culinary school-trained staff of the Claremont Café will prepare nutritious, enjoyable lunch every day for the campers. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and organic ingredients are used for all meals. Vegetarian options are always available. All food is peanut-free as well. We will give campers a snack each camp day as well.
