Guiding Principles

Guided by Claremont Preparatory School's mission the new High School prepares students for an active role as engaged and informed citizens in the 21st century who are caring, knowledgeable, imaginative, innovative and productive. The following are defining principles that will guide the creation of the high school and its continued development.

1.     Ours is curriculum that rejects traditional dichotomies by seeing more similarities than differences between the humanities and the sciences; by equally valuing the development of the student’s capacity to think in a linear, logical, analytical manner along side the development of artistic, empathetic, imaginative abilities.

2.     Located in lower Manhattan, the birthplace of NYC, our program of study reverberates with a strong sense of place, including its history, ecology, entrepreneurship, innovativeness and civic responsibility. Through partnerships and internships our students connect to the local community, the city, and in turn the nation and world. They will learn from lived experiences and exercise their obligation to community through service.

3.     Our students experience a wide range of intellectual, artistic and athletic opportunities as they seek to realize their talents and broaden their interests. The curriculum encourages individual pathways for the development of their abilities while providing a solid, core foundation for personal achievement and future learning.

4.     Our students are fluent regarding the 21st century’s global imperatives. The educational program, language study, travel, and new media and technology are engaged to foster connections, share human experiences and perceive a larger ethical purpose. A commitment to a sustainable and humane society follows.

5.     Our community is diverse, consisting of students who bring different life experiences to the school and to the classroom. These differences inform, challenge, enrich and influence our students’ beliefs. They learn to value questions, to test received tradition, to respect differing views and embrace both divergent and convergent thinking.

6.     Claremont Preparatory School itself is a laboratory from which our students will learn about leadership and collaboration. They share in its creation, its planning, its continuous renewal and growth and in the responsibility for its governance and culture.

7.     Our students love learning and living. Those qualities remain central as they “prep for life.”
