The study of a foreign language begins in Kindergarten. Students study French and Spanish for half a year each through second grade, then select one language to study more intensely in third and fourth grades. The program is designed to capitalize on young children’s innate ability to grasp languages, and the goal is to expose students to the words and sounds of a foreign language, building in complexity from year to year. Children learn about the cultures and traditions of French and Spanish speaking regions through songs, games, projects, cooking and other activities. The focus is on developing listening and speaking skills and on helping students understand their role as part of the larger global community.
