Mathematics is taught as a practical and integrated discipline. Working individually and in small groups, students use investigation, estimation, exploration and the use of math manipulatives, to gain confidence in their ability to use numbers.
Kindergarten
Number Sense: Numerals (1-20), counting, collecting, comparing, measuring, counting by 10s, estimation.
Math Concepts: Patterns, calendar work, graphing, sorting, 2-D and 3-D shapes, data collection, adding and taking away.
Critical Thinking: Classifying.
First Grade
Number Sense: Numerals (1-100), sequencing, counting and comparing, place value to the hundreds.
Math Concepts: Addition and subtraction, sorting and categorizing, bigger and taller, heavier and smaller, creating new patterns, tell time to the hour, recognize money.
Critical Thinking: Word problems, collecting and sorting data.
Second Grade
Number Sense: Grouping and regrouping, estimation, counting by 5s and 10s, number sense to 1000.
Math Concepts: Addition and subtraction, money, telling time to the nearest 5 minute and time-lines, symmetry, halves, constructing 2-D and 3-D shapes.
Critical Thinking: Comparisons, linear measurement problems, rhythm patterns, organizing data by classification and sorting.
Third Grade
Math Concepts: Multiplication tables up to the 10s, division, simple fractions, factors of 100, area, perimeter and polygons, geometric motions (slides, flips, and turns).
Critical Thinking: Independently develop and apply problem solving strategies and mathematical reasoning techniques, record, represent and analyze simple data.
Fourth Grade
Math Concepts: Expanded notation, number sense to 1000, area, fractions, graphing, attributes, two-digit multiplication problems, properties of geometric figures and shapes.
Critical Thinking: Independently develop and apply problem solving strategies and mathematical reasoning techniques, record, represent and analyze data, statistics.
