From the Lower School Head

It's my pleasure to welcome you to the Lower School website.

Rob Cousins

Claremont's Lower School is a vibrant, creative and joyful place. We share a belief that children are happiest when they are challenged and enthused by a developmentally appropriate, and well-planned curriculum. We know that children learn best when they are given authentic "hands on" activities. Active learning can take many forms. It might be 1st Graders indirectly learning about supply and demand when preparing to sell recycled items that they've made for Earth Day. It could be Preschoolers turning their classroom into an art gallery and writing invitations to parents and friends. Our talented and energetic faculty dedicate themselves to creating rich, meaningful activities that promote learning.

No two children are completely alike. Teachers at Claremont work hard to get to know and then support the different learning styles and abilities of the individual children in their class. They have high expectations for their children's work and behavior and provide clear feedback to their students on both. In addition, teachers give thoughtful attention to the children's social and emotional health and development. The faculty is very deliberate in building classroom communities in which children feel secure and safe to take risks, and in which all voices are heard and respected.

The notion of educating the "whole child" is an important one. The Lower School offers a rich, diverse curriculum. It is designed to enable children to discover and follow their passions in order for them to fully realize their potential, explore who they are as learners and find their place in the world. Ensuring proficiency in language arts and math is paramount but in addition, foreign language, the humanities, science and physical education all are important parts of the Lower School program. The arts are a particularly strong feature of the school; theater, music and the visual arts help to encourage creativity, open-ended thinking and cooperation.

This website offers only a taste of the highlights of Claremont's Lower School and I encourage you to come and see Claremont for yourself. I look forward to welcoming you to our school.
