The English curriculum is designed to foster a love of reading and writing. Building on the skills developed in Lower School, we use class discussions, small group and individual projects and direct instruction to further develop the analytical and written expression skills of our students.
Each grade learns and expands upon, as developmentally appropriate, skills such as the underlying structure of literature and poetry, critical analysis and inferencing, development of character, theme, and mood, figurative language and use of imagery.
We work with our students to develop their voices as writers, to be comfortable with both creative and expository writing. A strong understanding of grammar, sentence structure and editing skills supports their development as writers. Students use a writing process model for all of their writing.
As students move through the English curriculum in Middle School, each grade has a thematic focus to frame their learning experience.
5th Grade: Story and Experience
6th Grade: Character and Conflict
7th Grade: Identity and Human Nature
8th Grade: Power and Responsibility
